Most visitors see only Akihabara's main street and its gleaming electronics shops — but the real experience is in the side streets and upper floors. The multi-story game centers (Club Sega, Taito Game World, Hey) contain hundreds of machines from classic claw games to the latest rhythm games, fighting games and medal machines. Gaming floors dedicated to specific genres attract communities of serious players; watching a skilled player on a rhythm game like maimai or Taiko no Tatsujin is a spectacle in itself.
The retro game shops on streets like Akihabara Radio Kaikan contain physical games dating to the Famicom era, some at extraordinary prices. Maid cafés — where the servers play the role of household maids — are a uniquely Japanese social phenomenon; @home Café is considered the most accessible. Anime merchandise shops occupy entire buildings. Budget 4-5 hours minimum and arrive on a Saturday evening when the atmosphere peaks.
